Sony Announces “Next Generation” VR Headset For The PlayStation 5

-

Improved resolution, enhanced tracking, and new VR controllers confirmed.

Earlier this morning, Sony dropped a major bombshell on PlayStation fans with the reveal of a new VR system for the PlayStation 5.

A direct follow-up to PlayStation VR, this “next-generation” headset promises significant upgrades to performance as well as the design. This includes an improved resolution, better tracking and input, and a larger field-of-view. In addition to the above-mentioned improvements, the mysterious new device will feature a simplified setup process, connecting to the PS5 via a single cord as opposed to multiple cables and a processor unit.

The company also teased a new controller which—alongside improved ergonomics—will employ “key features found in the DualSense wireless controller.”

“There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021,” states Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President of Platform Planning & Management, in the official release. “But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality.”

PlayStation VR originally launched back in 2016 on the PlayStation 4 to generally positive reviews. Since then, Sony’s console-based VR headset has sold over 5 million units. Most recently, the company began introducing specific enhancements for the PlayStation 5, allowing players to experience PSVR exclusives such as Blood and Truth and Firewall Zero Hour with improved performance.

While it’s unclear exactly what kind of improvements this new-and-improved PSVR system will provide, several patents filed over the past couple of months may shed some light on several potential upgrades. This includes wireless functionality as well as a non-VR spectator mode just to name a few. Of course, it goes without saying that these patents do not guarantee the existence of said features; merely that Sony had at one point considered the possibility.
