Sony’s Next-Gen PlayStation VR Will See a Post-2021 Launch

-

It’s taken a while but Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has finally teased a few details about its upcoming virtual reality (VR) plans for PlayStation 5. While it may not have an official name just yet, the next-gen PlayStation VR is coming, just not this year.

PlayStation VR third anniversary

In a PlayStation Blog post, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning & Management, Hideaki Nishino confirmed that a dedicated VR system for its latest console was in development and that it would also feature new controllers. “We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input,” Nishino said. It’ll offer a “high-fidelity visual experience,” which leads VRFocus to believe it’ll offer 4k resolution which is becoming standard in TVs and monitors.

No specifications were revealed in that regard but the new headset will cable directly to the PlayStation 5 with a single cord, thus simplifying the setup process – so no breakout box by the sounds of it. It certainly seems like the new console was designed with the new VR headset in mind.

As for the controller, Nishino explains that it: “will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics.” So expect to see haptic triggers. Interestingly, the controller will be an example of SIE ensuring “future-proof technology,” could that mean the PlayStation Camera isn’t required considering PlayStation VR and PlayStation Move’s incompatibility.

It’s still unclear whether the new device will have inside-out tracking like Oculus Quest 2 or Vive Cosmos – the feature did previously appear in a patent.

There’s no official name at present but considering SIE’s history with its console naming, PlayStation VR 2 isn’t out of the question. What was made perfectly clear though is that the headset won’t appear in 2021, a festive 2022 is a likely bet.

VRFocus will continue its coverage of the next-gen PlayStation VR, reporting back with further updates.
